Someone we chatted to in Shenandoah was convinced that Washington DC was the spitting image of the city of Paris. While we’re not quite sure we see the exact resemblance, we had a pretty cool day checking out the capital.
Just like in Savannah, we smashed our boondocking skills out of the park in DC, finding a 24 hour car park for just $12 right in the heart of the city. Sure, we were sleeping next to a ridiculously busy train station, but the fact that we dodged splashing out $200 on a hotel room (or camping somewhere an hour outside the city) felt like an epic win! We just rolled out of the campervan in the morning and boom, there we were: Capitol Hill.

I suppose, on this trip, we often end up just seeing the touristy bits of cities; Washington DC was no exception. There is quite a clear section stretching from the Capitol Building, down through the many Smithsonian museums, past the White House and up to the Lincoln Memorial, with a few war memorials dotted around.

We performed our duty as travellers and traipsed around the sights for the day. We even took a rare break from each other to go see separate museums (for a whole 2 hours!) – Aleks went to the Air & Space Museum, and I headed to the National Gallery of Art… how Aleks survived 2 hours without me I’ll never know 😉

It was an excellent day of lazy ambling; the only notable achievement was the fact that I chugged a whole iced coffee in the space of a minute, having been told by a museum guard that since the museum cafe was completely surrounded by art pieces, I was trapped there with my coffee, at the exact moment I had to go find Aleks. Happy to inform you that my chugging abilities are still going strong 🙂

Night fell and brought my classiness back out, as I pretended to be Olivia Pope sipping wine at a Capitol Hill bar. Another city, another whirlwind day of sightseeing: next up, New York City!
